Message I must tell everyone that I really put my foot in my mouth with the post I made a few days ago which included the workings of the ECU. I decided that I better try to explain what happened to prompt that post. Right now (and especially that early morning which later in that morning prompted the post) I am doing a lot of computer programming (what I do besides my day job) and when I’m in the programming mode I stay up at all hours of the night. Because what I do is very repetitious I let my mind do a lot of wandering and start doing things like pondering on stuff that I’m more interested in. Well, I was pondering about the ECU in our cars and started doing some searching (at the same time I was working) about the operation of the ECU and I (unfortunately) came across information which did not pertain to the way our older ECU’s worked and that led me in the wrong direction. I started using the information I found with the knowledge I already had, which was the part about how micro’s and EPROM’s work together because I do a lot of work on equipment that uses that scenario (my day job) and paired it up in an assumption that our ECU’s worked in this manor. Well, you know the old saying about the word assume:(. So anyway, yes, I know about how the secondary map is used to adjust timing and what-not when things like knock are detected. This is both common practice and something that’s been discussed on TT.Net many times. The other things that have been discussed many times is how the ECU handles safety boost and limp mode as two different things. I am in no way new to this and my only excuse in saying they were the same is “brain fart” (which was easy to do when in the state of mind I was in at the time I post that message). Anyway, instead of just posting my thoughts on why I thought it was safe to use the JWT chip (which was the main point of that post in the first place) I put egg on my face with some pretty blatant and incorrect statements (which deep in my mind I already knew the correct answers and those answers were brought to an awakening with the slaps in the face by SpiceyZ and Joe(NoVa), BTW, thank you guys) which I apologize for saying and misleading the people that read that post.

I also want to apologize to Ash for a statement I made in an even earlier post where I basically said “some of the other than JWT chips are just modifications of the JWT chip anyway”. That statement (being that Ash’s chip was one of the chips in discussion), in effect was accusing Ash of doing the same and I retract that. Also, after examining one of Ash’s replies regarding the two main processors in our older ECUs (90'-93') and researching how those processors function I determined (with certainty this time) that the main software program which runs the complete system of our ECU’s is indeed within the EPROM along with the fuel maps and such. In fact, I was able to obtain the complete pin outs along with their function of both of those processors. A neat thing about that information is that it makes it easy to identify which pins are used for which sensor inputs which would help you to troubleshoot and repair (using backward tracing without a schematic), if possible, an inoperable ECU and if one wanted to they could even create a complete program of their own without even needing the original Nissan code. Of course it would be tedious and you would need to know about the software programming needed to create such a program.

So, putting all that aside and going back to the original reason of that post which was why I think JWT chips are safe, here again is why (and this is only my opinion BTW). I believe JWT keeps their tune rich to prevent a catastrophic failure. It gives you more HP but at the same time gives you safe function and allows them to sell a “same tuned” chip to the general public without the worry of repercussions (remember, this is only my opinion). You are being given a chip that provides a “safe” HP increase. The reason I believe JWT keeps the secondary and primary maps the same is to keep a consistency in power when racing. That is what you want when you are racing and the JWT ECU’s are made for it (hence the picture in this post) if you read the label. OK, so this is only my opinion and I apologize to those that feel this subject is a horse beater but one thing I have learned is that something can always be gained from repetitive information. Sometimes you tend to forget certain things as I surely did in my original post.
